Penny West, the great granddaughter of Katherine Cheney and Gustavus Farley, Jr. recently was named a 2023 Maine Literary Awards Finalist for her new children’s book Once Upon a Time Nobody Could Read, illustrated by Maret Hensick. She offers literacy from the unusual and joyful point of view of the invention of reading and writing, appealing not only to the curious kindergartener and third grader, but also to their parents and grandparents!
