Our cousin Emily Cheney Neville (1919–1997) was an award winning writer of young peoples’ books. Her first book, It’s Like This, Cat, in 1963 was honored with the Newbery Medal in 1964. She was born in Manchester, CT to Howell and Anne Bunce Cheney, attended Oxford School in Hartford and graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1940. Her other works include Berries Goodman, The Seventeen-Street Gang, Garden of Broken Glass, and Traveler from a Small Kingdom. A poignant memoir of growing up in the ‘20s, Emily describes life in the small world—the Cheney Family Place, where Emily and her sister grew up, and recounts their adventures with their cousins, at the summer home in Keene Valley.
